Gillette, WY

It's Sunday night and I'm sitting in a classroom at Westwood High School, where I'm doing my moderately convincing impersonation of a teacher for two weeks. Late on a Sunday night - what a dedicated teacher, you say. I do take this Artist in Residence thing pretty seriously, but at the moment I'm goofing off.

Last year I came out to Gillette to put on a pilot version of a workshop with my friends Paul Dowler and Joe Lunne (rhymes with funny). It's a two-week program that combines ropes course work with creative writing. The two are sort of a natural metaphor for each other, so it works out quite well. Joe & Paul are film-makers, and they work with students to make a documentary about my students' work. One significant byproduct has been that Joe and Paul and I have become friends, and gotten into all kinds of trouble on our time off. Since it's a two week program, we end up with a weekend off in the middle - and a bunch of great video equipment. So what do you expect?

Last year we started shooting our film "Unknown the Great: the Life and Times of Buddy Schmcghee," which will soon be available on this web site. No kidding. It's sort of a mockumentary. In the vein of Spinal Tap or Waiting for Guffman. We'll be adding a Buddy page here some time. Keep checkin' in.

This weekend we elected to make me a music video, and at the moment we're logging the raw footage. Pretty funny. We chose Saturday. Actually, Joe chose it and that sounded like fun to me. So tomorrow night we'll edit. I have absolutely no idea what we'll do with it, but it sure was fun to make! Hopefully we'll be able to put a streaming video of it on here some time. Keep checking in.

Whew... all that and I haven't even gotten to the world tour yet! That's kind of how things are for me right now. I'm fully aware that I'm leaving the country in nine days, but there's too much going on here to turn my attention to that quite yet. It's going to be quite a run, though, and I'll be writing updates frequently. As things now stand I'll be performing in Australia, New Zealand, Bosnia, Germany and Holland, then goofing off for a few days in France before coming home. The whole thing will take two months. Check the calendar and let me know if you'll be anywhere near. Hey, for that matter, email your friends in those countries and send them to the shows! :)

Well school comes early, so I guess I'll sign off. Thanks, as always, for popping in on the web site. There are lots of cool things coming up in the next few months. We're hoping to put out a limited edition numbered live CD, a box set and a movie, and who knows what else will come about! Oh and one more long-range planning thing - in February we'll be having a big bash to celebrate ten years of playing music as my only job. I'll keep you posted on that.

Peace to you,

David
