Full Review by Kevin McCarthy

The clear growth in David’s songwriting is supported by insightful production and a stellar cast of musicians. These include Michael Manring, who is best known for his extensive work with Michael Hedges; Keith Lowe, currently playing bass in Fiona Apple’s road band; Hans Teuber on saxophone and flute, now touring with Ani DiFranco; and guest appearances by Southeastern singer/songwriters Beth Wood, Chris Rosser and Christine Kane.

Evan Brubaker’s production is as appropriate as it is creative, letting each song define itself rather than forcing it into a box. Some songs are recorded with no instrumentation other than David’s voice and guitar. Others break new ground for his recorded work, incorporating strings, horns and stacked electric guitar tracks.

And by the way...

Lots of people ask about the cover art on Corners. When trying to decide what to do with the cover for this record,, I only knew that I didn't want to be on the cover, and that I wanted the cover art to convey a certain mood. I called Lynne Siler, the professional photographer who shot all the pictures for Hard Earned Smile, and asked her what she had in her portfolio that might fit the bill. She sent six images, and this one was clearly right. It's a photo of her own reflection in the face of a steel sculpture in Florence, Italy. The texture of the photograph is due to marring and rust on the metal, and was not added by computer manipulation. Special thanks, once again, to Lynne for sharing her superb art.

The Performing Songwriter magazine says...

It seems especially fitting that David LaMotte supplements the track listing for his latest CD with the name of the city in which each song was written. Contemplative and intimate, LaMotte's acoustic-based compositions sound conceived by a man who's at home no matter where he finds himself, so long as he's got his guitar in-hand. Produced with a light touch by Evan Brubaker, Corners demonstrates why LaMotte has long been one of western North Carolina's most renowned songwriters.

Employing a variety of tunings (which he thoughtfully includes in the liner notes), LaMotte creates melodious folk pop imbued with a subtle, joyous spirit. Vocally, LaMotte exudes an easy going charm that brings to mind James Taylor (or, at times, America's Gerry Beckley), but at no point does he come off as imitative. Supported by a superb cast of backers that includes Keith Lowe (bass), Sean Halley (electric guitar), and Dave Jette (drums), as well as guest turns from Michael Manring, Beth Wood and Christine Kane, LaMotte constructs an aural world that's as inviting as a warm smile.
