I was blown away to get the news that in a June 2 Essence magazine article titled “11 Children’s Books To Teach Your Kids About Racism And Discrimination,” my book White Flour was listed as number 4.
Given that Essence is a prominent magazine by, for, and of black women, I am beyond moved that they found my telling of this important story to be a useful tool, as they wrote, “to illustrate to children how to non-violently respond to racism.”
The article led to strong sales for the book in June, and I am donating June’s sales proceeds to seven organizations: NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Black Lives Matter, Umoja Health, Wellness, and Justice Collective, BeLoved Asheville, Lakota People’s Law Project, Equal Justice Initiative, and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
